Social Capital Club-
The Power of Who You Know
Social Capital - defined by networks, trust, and reciprocity - is crucial for thriving communities fostering safety, economic health, and mutual support.
What is Social Capital?
Why it Matters?
How to use Social Capital?
Social capital is essentially the “power of your circle,” your personal support network. It isn’t about money in the bank; it’s about the value found in your relationships. It refers to the resources and doors that open because of the positive, supportive relationships in your life. For a young person, this might look like a teacher giving college advice, a coach offering a pep talk, or a mentor introducing them to a potential employer.
However, simply knowing people isn’t always enough. To truly benefit from these connections, young people need more than just access; they need the skills and confidence to actually reach out and use those relationships to reach their goals.
Building social capital is vital for young adults because it transforms “potential” into “opportunity.” However, the true value lies in a youths ability to activate those connections to achieve their goals.
For young adults—especially those from historically marginalized communities—the Social Capital Club matters because it helps youth build the confidence to reach out and the provide opportunities to gain skills to navigate professional networks, empowering them to take charge of their own futures. Ultimately, social capital ensures that a young person’s success is supported by a community, making their path to thriving more sustainable.
The core message of the Social Capital Club is that having a network of relationships is only the first step; those connections only truly help when young people know how to use them.
The Social Capital Club can bridge this gap. Instead of just introducing a youth to a peer, colleague, or professional, this program teaches youth the skills and confidence needed to reach out, ask for advice, or seek opportunities. When adults and youth work together as partners, social capital becomes a shared tool: the young person brings their own goals and energy, while I Pour Life provides the “insider” access and resources to help them succeed.
