LifeStrengths Ethiopia
Youth Development

In 2018, we launched the first-ever youth LifeCoaching
program in Ethiopia, and have had over 25 youth in Kore participate thus far.

Youth is the fastest-growing population in Ethiopia, yet an estimated 27% of youth are unemployed and unprepared to become self-sufficient adults. We’ve observed this number to be even higher in Kore where many youth have not been able to complete their high school educations, live on the streets, have become teen parents, and have not been able to secure employment due to extreme levels of poverty in the area.

Our unique LifeCoaching model helps youth focus on their individual strengths and opportunities instead of the challenges they face. Through one-on-one weekly meetings with a LifeCoach, youth identify growth opportunities, grow their skills, and make a clear plan for their future to help them become fully self-sufficient. LifeCoaches help connect youth to continuing education and employment opportunities that move youth forward toward their dreams.

But, beyond workforce readiness and job skills training, our Ethiopian staff and LifeCoaches help youth discover their purpose, the unique strengths and talents they were created with, and help them develop into the best version of themselves.

I Pour Life Ethiopia’s holistic development program for the youth at-risk in Kore, Addis Ababa, include the following activities:

  • weekly life coaching
  • monthly family time
  • networking for their placement in education, employable
  • skills, and employment
  • getting assistance in their startups
  • reading books
  • starting saving
  • doing regular exercise
  • and most importantly giving back what they have to their community by voluntarily participate in different activities.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERING

Through the encouragement of LifeCoaches, youth are volunteering to help the community outside the I Pour Life Ethiopia compound. Youth provide weekly reporting about what they did, how they felt, and what they will do next. The volunteering aspect of the LifeCoaching program empowers youth to listen and respond to community needs.

February 1- Aug 31, 2019:
Youth committed to voluntarily teaching 20 women from the Women Empowerment program through AAFL (Accelerated Adult Functional Literacy).

July 1 – Sept 6, 2019:
Youth provided voluntarily teaching to the 21 children in a summer school project.

The youth dedication was incredible in both the projects, stating “it was really a challenge for us to be on time, to wake up early in cold summer, but it’s a good learning experience that adds discipline in our life”.

September 27, 2019:
I Pour Life Ethiopia gave appreciation certificates to seven Youth by recognizing their efforts to assist destitute women and vulnerable children by being their teachers and role models.
