Mother’s day is on May 10th but we want to recognize the hardworking mothers around the world all year long. I Pour Life’s Global Women’s Empowerment program has allowed us to build relationships with incredible mothers in Kore, Ethiopia. One of these women is Liya . She has been strong and resilient through every challenge life has thrown at her.
Liya was born into a family of 10 kids in the city of Addis Ababa. Tragically, all 9 of her siblings died along with her mother. At only 7 years old, she moved to Kore all by herself to find work. She worked as a maid for 9 years and eventually started her own business selling local alcohol. Liya’s business had to stop when everything she had was stolen.
When she was just 16 years old, she was pressured into getting married. Liya became pregnant and when her daughter was 6 months old, Liya became very sick. She became so sick that she was unable to care for her daughter and had to leave her on the streets with the hope that someone else would take care of her.
Liya is now back together with her daughter who is 17 years old. She also now has a 14-year-old son and she is raising them both by herself. Liya works extremely hard to provide for her children. She told us, “I don’t want my children to be disappointed.”
Liya Finds Hope
Along with her financial challenges, her illness limits her social life. She is shamed for her illness, but Liya is no longer alone. She now has a family at I Pour Life who loves and accepts her just as she is. Even though she has gone through so much, Liya has never given up. She has a new dream to sell housewares and she has new hope for her life.
“I want to see myself be changed and be a change agent for others too. I want to help others who are passing through the life I’ve passed through. I believe my life will change and I trust God. It’s good to help and support each other. With unity, we can do lots of things.”-Liya
